The Centre for Regulation and Enforcement (CRE) within NSW Health are seeking a motivated leader to join their mission in regulating tobacco and e-cigarette retailing across the state. This role is vital to NSW's Government commitment to smoke-free environments and the enforcement of the Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008 and the Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act 1966.

As a Senior Tobacco Regulatory Control Officer, you will lead a "Flying Squad" team focused on state-wide reactive enforcement. This is a high-impact "foot in the door" opportunity, with many previous contractors successfully transitioning into permanent NSW Health roles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee covert (undercover buys) and overt (seizures and inspections) compliance activities

  • Prepare high-quality prosecution briefs, maintain the chain of evidence, and attend court to present cases.

  • Analyse compliance data to identify state-wide trends and contribute to the improvement of risk-based compliance programs.
  • Build constructive relationships with co-regulators (including Police), legal providers, and industry stakeholders.

The "Flying in Fly out" Lifestyle

This role is highly mobile and requires a leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment.

  • Travel: Frequent travel across NSW, including being away 2–3 nights per week to support regional teams (e.g., Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Tweed Heads).
  • Logistics: All travel and accommodation are arranged through our travel provider, with meal expenses reimbursed via corporate cards.

Key Requirements

  • A background in investigations, compliance, or government (e.g., Fair Trading, Council, or Police).

  • Certificate IV in Government Investigations (or equivalent) highly regarded

  • Exceptional communication skills, computer literacy, and the ability to manage difficult situations involving emotional or uncooperative members of the public

  • Previous experience leading a team

  • A valid NSW driver’s license is mandatory
